CYOA Friday: "Reluctant - Chapter 17"

Hauling yourself upright, you hobble down the corridor into the backroom. The kitchen, once a darkened room, is presently filled with dawn's sunlight. A doorway on your left leads into another room. You shove through the door and discover an utility room. In front of you is a backdoor. Behind you, there is the distinct sound of the front door crashing open and heavy footsteps rushing in your direction.

He yells something. You fumble with the lock and jerk the door open. Pausing to look, you glimpse his form entering the kitchen. You spin and crash through the screen door, becoming entangled in the mesh netting as you fall.

Seconds after you hit the ground, he lands on you. You haven’t the strength to fight him off. He grabs at you and tries pinning you to the ground. With what strength you can muster, you scream and try kicking him off. You cannot see him though. It is all happening too fast and your weary state prevents you from opening your eyes. He says something, but his voice is so muffled you cannot understand it.

You are slipping away. Each pump of your legs drain you. It is getting harder to fight him. As you fade out, you sense him lean in and finally hear it.

“Lie still…it’s over now, kiddo”
