Liberty Bus Crash

As some of you may know already, either from emails, CNN or news channels picking the story up, there was a school bus crash in my hometown of Liberty, MO.

The bus was heading toward an intersection when it veered to the right and slammed into traffic on the intersecting highway. The bus became airborne as it hit a ditch. The two cars that it hit were carried to the other side of the ditch as well.

--For those of you formerly from Liberty, the bus was southbound on 291 and preparing to cross 152. It drove through that entrance to 152 right in front of Perkins, drove across 152 and landed in the space between the recently vacated KFC and Platte County Bank.

38 students ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade were on the bus. Of those, 15 were released to their parents and the remainder sent to local hospitals. Two fatalities have been announced, both speculated to be the drivers of the other cars.

While I am concerned with the condition of all those involved, I am eager to hear an explanation for this tragedy. The bus driver is apparently in good condition. What happened that caused her to lose control of this bus? Why is it 2005 and we still don't have seatbelts in school buses?

There will be another press conference at 3 PM, CST. The conference and footage from this morning can be viewed at www.thekansascitychannel.com.

I will post more as it is revealed.
