The most recent information to be revealed is that the bus driver has complained about the air brakes on the bus at least three times since November 2004. The driver's attorney pointed out that she didn't commit any traffic violations. He believes that it was a mechanical malfunction that made it impossible for her to stop. I think a lot of people have hoped it would be mechanical. It's much easier to deal with the brakes stopped working than it is to think, hey, this lady went crazy and gunned it. I'm feeling more comfortable with the brake explanation now that they have produced documentation that the bus has had this issue in the past.
There was also an interview with a local Semi trainer who said she did everything by the textbook. He said she did a great job of preventing the bus from flipping and rolling. There definitely would have been more deaths had that occurred. The bus driver is reportedly still in the hospital with a broken back.
Of the two children still at Children's Mercy hospital, one of them was upgraded to serious condition. The other child's parents have requested that no information be released.
The NTSB has stated that it could be up to a year before they really know what happened. To me, that's BS. Certainly you can slap a "Hot" label on the lab work and get it back faster than they anticipate.
